Learn How to Alter Your Clothes and Give Your Wardrobe a Second Life with Silvana from Beaches Sewing

Who hasn’t got a few garments tucked away in the wardrobe that you love, but never wear because they just don’t fit quite right?

Maybe you’ve lost or gained a little weight, fallen victim to some bad online shopping choices, or indulged in a bit of impulse retail therapy. Or perhaps you’ve got kids whose growing and changing bodies mean their clothes constantly need adjustments.

This Beginners Clothing Alterations Class is the perfect way to learn how to:

  • Adjust and refit clothes that don’t fit properly

  • Revive old favourites so they feel like new again

  • Make simple sewing alterations that save money and reduce waste

  • Build confidence with basic sewing skills – no prior experience needed

Our friendly instructor will guide you step-by-step, teaching practical techniques you can use straight away to breathe new life into your clothes. By the end of the class, you’ll not only walk away with altered garments but also with the confidence to take on future wardrobe tweaks at home.

✨ Perfect for beginners, parents, and anyone wanting to reduce fashion waste
✨ All materials and equipment are provided – just bring a few items you’d like to adjust

PART 1 of the session.

In this class we will do some basic common alterations starting with hemming.

We will measure, mark, prepare, cut and sew two most common hems, basic hem and invisible (blind) hem.

PART 2 of the session.

In the second part of the class we will have a look at your item of choice (from your wardrobe) that needs adjustment.

Depending on complexity of the task we can either alter it during the class or give you clear markings and guidelines to make it easy for you to alter it yourself at home.

Please bring along a garment you would like to learn how to alter. Options can include;

  1. Hem options (trouser, skirt, dress, uniform, silk, roll hem (not overlock), bias hem, ideally marked already or easy to try on for marking.
  2. Take in trousers or a skirt waist.
  3. Take in trouser legs.
  4. Take in a simple dress (no lining, beading or sequin, or gathering).
  5. Shoulder or strap adjustment on sleeveless garment.

Please note:

Materials for the first half of this class will be provided for you.

When it comes to bringing a piece from home and if you are a beginner - please avoid bringing stretchy or slippery fabrics for this class
