Slow Stitching Embroidery Workshop with Ruth from Craft School Oz.

The term slow stitching is a relatively new one but the practice is ancient.

Hand stitching has been used in many cultures such as the Japanese Boro, Indian Kantha, hand stitched quilts, mending clothes and many countries that have a history of hand-stitching traditions. We are now connecting with these old traditions to create beautiful works.

Did you know that Australia sends 6000kg of textile waste to landfill every 10 minutes, as quote by the War on Waste ABC. By using up some of your craft stash or clothing you no longer need we can all do our bit to help reduce textile waste and this is a great way to do it.

We will explore texture, stitch and subtle colours to create new old-look textile pieces, which could be, an art piece, a stitch journal, a bag or even an item of clothing.

Materials are included, but if you have a craft stash of fabric you have been keeping for a while you might like to bring along some of your own materials which will make your piece unique to you.

      No previous experience is necessary.
All materials are provided including nibbles & refreshments.

      ABOUT YOUR TEACHER

Ruth has drawn her inspiration from many sources and has learnt the skills from travelling and meeting women who have shared their knowledge. After visiting South East Asia, spending time on a floating village working with the water hyacinth plant, living in Arnhem Land for 18 months and being a member and active participant of the Basket Weavers of Victoria she has bought together various styles and developed her own designs and methods and is now sharing her knowledge.

She works with plant fibres, recycled fabrics, wool, thread, handmade cordage and even paper.
